New Census data shows fastest, slowest growing areas in Michigan

DETROIT – US Census released new numbers this week on population changes by county in the United States.

While Wayne County's population continued to decline, second to only Cook County (Chicago), surrounding areas saw growth.

One of the fastest growing Michigan counties is Kent County, home to Grand Rapids, which saw a 1 percent gain in population. Washtenaw County grew 1.1 percent, and Oakland County grew 0.3 percent.

Macomb County grew 0.4 percent, while Monroe County actually declined 0.2 percent.

The Northern Lower Peninsula area also saw growth, while the Upper Peninsula saw small declines.

Allegan County saw a 0.8 percent increase. Keweenaw County increased 1.1 percent.

The fastest growing areas in the U.S. were mostly in Utah, Texas and Iowa.

Wayne County saw a 0.44 percent decline, which amounts to about 7,696 loss.

In the coming months, the Census Bureau will release 2016 population estimates for cities and towns, as well as national, state and county population estimates by age, sex, race and Hispanic origin.
