OXFORD, Mich. – An Oakland County deputy's handgun was fired Tuesday when an 18-year-old student tried to disarm him during an arrest, officials with Oxford Community Schools said in a letter to parents and guardians.
The student was arrested around 4:10 p.m. for assaulting his girlfriend in the school hallway, police said. He is an online student at Oxford High School who has school privileges, but also a written agreement with the school to stay away from the girl due to stalking-type issues.
When the assault happened, a school administrator detained the student and took him to the front office. The 18-year-old struck the teacher in the chest with a closed fist while they were heading to the office.
The student resisted arrested and tried to disarm the deputy from the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, the school announced.
While the deputy tried to retain his holstered sidearm, it discharged, firing a single shot, officials said. The shot went through the bottom of the holster, struck the floor and lodged into a nearby wall.
No one was injured by the shot, officials said.
Oxford officials said the high school is safe and secure. They said school is expected to be in session as normal Wednesday.
The student has been taken to the Oakland County Jail on possible charges of domestic violence, attempting to disarm a police officer, and resisting and obstructing a police officer.
The Oakland County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.
