Federal task force member shot outside Marriott Hotel in Southfield

Suspect is dead

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – A member of an FBI task force was shot Friday evening outside of the Marriott Hotel in Southfield, according to an FBI spokesperson.

The shooting happened in the parking lot of the hotel on Northwestern Highway.

The incident stemmed from a joint task force on human trafficking conducting an operation.

Shots were exchanged after a struggle over a weapon. The suspect is dead.

The suspect has been identified as 24-year-old Rakeem Bentleym, of Kentucky.

The task force member was hit in the bullet-proof vest. The vest protected the officer.

"The officer is OK,” said MSP Lt. Michael Shaw. “He was struck right in the vest and the vest did its job. It did what it was supposed to do and he was able to continue with the fight.”

Police have confirmed that no arrests were made. Vehicles were towed away from the scene.
