ROMULUS, Mich. – A man police had been searching for in connection with the death of his estranged wife and her friend in Detroit was shot and killed Monday by officers in a hotel in Romulus.
Embassy Suites guests and employees were evacuated just after 7 a.m. after police said they got a tip that Pablo Medina was there. Medina worked as a maintenance man at the hotel.
“It looks right now like he was living here, in the storage closet for the last weekend or so. So, he’s been here for a little while," said Capt. Joshua Monte.
An employee recognized Medina and called police. SWAT teams went room by room searching for him.
"A hostage situation is your nightmare, so we were contacting rooms, contacting people that were in the rooms telling them to lock their doors and advise them of the situation and we were physically escorting folks down to get them out of here," Monte said.
Medina jumped out of the storage closet and pointed a revolver at officers, Monte said. He was fatally shot.
Medina was suspected of shooting his wife and her friend on Saturday as they sat in a car on Detroit's west side, police said.
Medina's wife had just filed for divorce.
