Trump inauguration event schedule, what to expect

Festivities are set to begin Thursday for President-elect Donald J. Trump's inauguration. 

Trump will be sworn in as the 45th president on Friday, Jan. 20. Here's what's on the schedule:

Thursday, Jan. 19 -- Concert, welcome celebration

On Thursday, a day-long concert will take place at the Lincoln Memorial. Voices of the People will begin at 10:35 a.m. and will feature performers such as the Republican Hindu Coalition and high school marching bands.

The "Make America Great Again! Welcome Celebration" will follow. The program will be broadcasted nationally and features Toby Keith, Three Days Grace, Lee Greenwood and other performances. Jennifer Holliday was set to perform but dropped out. The concert is from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., and Trump is slated to make remarks during the event.

Friday, Jan. 20 -- Mass, tea with Obama, inauguration

Friday will begin with Trump, Vice President-elect Mike Pence and their families attending mass at St. John's Episcopal Church, followed by Trump and his wife Melania Trump joining President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama for tea at the White House.

The inauguration will take place on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, with musical performances beginning at 9:30 a.m. “America's Got Talent” singer Jackie Evancho, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the Talladega College marching band and the Rockettes are scheduled to perform.

Opening remarks start at 11:30 a.m. Pence’s oath of office will be given by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, and Trump will officially assume the title of president when he swears in with U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts at noon.

The inaugural parade and balls will follow Friday afternoon and evening.

Saturday, Jan. 21 -- Planned protests 

Protests surrounding the inauguration are planned on Friday as well as Saturday. On Saturday at 10 a.m., the Women's March on Washington will take place in Washington D.C. According to the Women’s March Website, the march will “will send a bold message to our new government on their first day in office, and to the world that women's rights are human rights.” Marches are also planned around the country, including Michigan.

From 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., the Women’s March on Lansing will be held at the Michigan state capital. Marches are also planned for Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids.
