Police: Mother shot, killed son in Farmington Hills apartment

Police say mother claims shooting at Independence Green Apartments was self-defense

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – A 24-year-old man was killed early Wednesday morning when he was shot by his 42-year-old mother in a Farmington Hills apartment, police said.

The shooting happened just before 2 a.m. in the Independence Green Apartments off Grand River Avenue near Halsted Road.

Police said the mother told officers she shot her son in self-defense after he forced his way into her apartment.

"She was defending herself and other family members from an assault being committed by her son. There have been past allegations of assault involving the son," police said in a statement.

Farmington Hills Police Chief Chuck Nebus said a 911 call indicated the woman's son had broken into her apartment.

"She reported that her son had broken into her apartment and that there had been a shooting," said Nebus.

Nebus said the mother claims her son approached her with a piece of cement or concrete. She felt threatened. The family has had a history of problems.

"We did respond earlier in the evening at 8:47 p.m. ... there was a report of family trouble," said Nebus.

It all started with a verbal argument earlier in the evening. Police don't know why the man was trying to force his way into the home.

The mother has been cooperating with police. She does have a registered pistol in her name.
