Sterling Heights police seek assistance in locating suspect in assault case

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – Police are asking for assistance in identifying a man who they say was involved in an assault Sunday night.

According to authorities between 11 and 11:45 p.m. Sunday, a woman was walking her dog at the Maple Grove Apartments when she saw a man exit a black panel van.

The man walked toward her, police said, and attempted to grab the back of her jacket, but his hand slipped. The victim scared him off with a concealed handgun she had in her possession, police said. 

The Sterling Heights Police Department said the suspect may have had a knife or some other type of weapon with him.

The suspect is described as being a black man, approximately 5 feet 7 inches tall with a medium build and a scar on his upper lip or a cleft palate. He was dressed in all black and had a black hood pulled tightly around his face.
