Store on Detroit's east side struggling with robberies

Surveillance video shows 3 men breaking into store Monday morning

DETROIT – A Boost Mobile store on Detroit's east side was broken into Monday for the sixth time.

The break-in happened around 6:50 a.m. at the store on Harper. The manager, Abu Ishmael Mujaheed, said three men tried to break in through the back door but couldn't, so they went through the front door.

"They popped the lock, broke the shutter and kicked the door in, which I felt was brazen. This is something that normal people think before they do something foolish, but obviously these guys have no shame," said Mujaheed.

He said they stole a robotic vacuum, headsets and phones. They also took the register, which only had coins in it. Mujaheed said he's lost about $23,000 from all of the robberies.

"Instead of being comfortable and at ease, you have to be concerned about your establishment being invaded," he said.

The robbery before yesterday morning happened a couple of weeks ago. There also were robberies earlier in the year and the year before.

The business has been there for two years, and Mujaheed's resilience is starting to fade.

"I may have to put two padlocks on there now and sell the business and move somewhere else," he said.

He refuses to allow the robberies to bring him down, though.

"Whatever they did, I'm not gonna let it rest on me, just keep moving forward. It is what it is," he said.

Anyone with information about the robbery is asked to call the Detroit Police Department.
