Student brings gun to Belleville High School

BELLEVILLE, Mich. – Belleville High School Principal Abdul Madyun is standing behind a decision he said he made with Van Buren Public Schools Superintendent Michael Van Tassel.

This past Friday, a freshman at the school was found with a handgun in his backpack. Police were called and the student was arrested. The student allegedly stole the gun from a relative's home.

Madyun said the 13-year-old was having issues with another student. The boy said he needed the gun because he was scared of the other student's friends.

However, many parents still don't know about the gun and the arrest at the school. Madyun did not send out an email alerting parents. He said no students were in danger.

"There was not a loaded gun in school ... so again, where's the line? ... there were bullets in the backpack," he said. "In a separate part."

Parents are furious they have not been notified about a child bringing a gun to the school.

The student has been charged and expelled from the school.

The principal said he has an open-door policy. He is ready to talk to and meet with parents about why an alert was not sent.
