DETROIT – The University of Michigan was ranked in the top five best public colleges in a new study.
US News & World Rankings released its annual list of the best colleges in the U.S., and U of M ranked fourth for public schools.

Michigan ranked 27th overall in universities.
Michigan State University ranked 33rd in public, and 82nd overall, while Michigan Tech tied for 56th in public and 118th overall.

Western Michigan ranked 103rd in public and 194th overall. Central Michigan ranked 110th in public and 202nd overall.
Here are the top public schools, according to the rankings:
Public colleges and universities typically operate under the supervision of state governments and are funded, in part, by tax dollars and subsidies from the state. As a result, these universities often offer discounted tuition to residents of their states. Public schools run the gamut from small liberal arts colleges to large research institutions.
