DETROIT, Mich. – Two vacant homes were destroyed by a fire Sunday morning on Detroit's west side.

The homes were located on the corner of Beechwood and Oregon streets.
The first fire engine that arrived on the scene connected to the hydrant in front of the houses, but the fire's heat became too hot. The fire caused the vinyl siding on the house across the street to melt.
Fire crews disconnected and moved farther down the street to safety.
After the structures collapsed and the heat was less intense, they reconnected to the first hydrant.
