BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Dashcam video shows a Bloomfield Township police officer get hit by a car Saturday on Interstate 75 near Adams Road.
The Bloomfield Township Police Department posted the video to its Facebook page, explaining the officer was outside of his own vehicle assisting a driver who slid off the interstate into the median. Police say an 18-year-old driver lost control and struck the officer's patrol car before hitting the officer and the disabled car.
The video shows the officer narrowly avoid getting crushed between the cars. He was transported to St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He was released and is home recovering.
Chief Geof Gaudard said this is a reminder for drivers to slow down during this kind of weather.
"First, I am thankful that our officer is recovering and going to be OK," said Gaudard in a statement. "This is a stark reminder of just how dangerous our job is. It is imperative that drivers understand that during inclement weather, they need to slow down and maintain control of their vehicle. By slowing down, they can react to situations in front of them, like a patrol car with emergency lights on. Crashes like this are preventable, if drivers are attentive and understand their abilities and the abilities of their vehicles during bad weather."
