Man who intervened in stabbing of employee at GM Tech Center honored by Warren mayor

Paco Sarder held suspect back until police arrived

WARREN, Mich. – A man who helped stop an attack on a 52-year-old GM employee at the Tech Center in Warren was recognized by the mayor.

Mayor Jim Fouts gave a special proclamation Thursday during a ceremony for Paco Sarder, a valet service supervisor who was working at the Tech Center when the attack on Stephanie Kerr happened.

Police said Kerr's daughter, Chevonne Taylor, went to the Tech Center on Feb. 10 and asked that her mother be called down to the lobby. While Kerr and Taylor were outside, Taylor began stabbing her mother with a knife, police said.

Sarder, a licensed gun holder, pulled out his weapon and used it to hold Taylor back until police could arrive.

"I pulled out my firearm and ordered her to drop the knife or I would have to fire," Sarder said. "Know when to use lethal force. If I can neutralize the threat without having to fire, I get to save the victims life and the suspects life."

Kerr suffered life-threatening injuries to her neck, stomach and back.

"This is a clear act of heroism by Sarder, probably saving a life," Fouts said. "He deserves special recognition for his quick action."

Sarder was fired after the incident, but has since gotten his job back.

"I'm grateful I have this job, but if this would have cost my job, I would do it over again," Sarder said.

Taylor is charged with assault with intent to murder and carrying a dangerous weapon. Kerr's family said Taylor has mental health issues.
