DETROIT – A Wayne State University police officer was shot in the head Tuesday while stopping a man on a bicycle off campus near the corner of Lincoln and Brainard streets in Detroit, police said.
"We have an officer who's been shot," Assistant Detroit police Chief Steve Dolunt said. "He was doing the stop of an individual on a bicycle. He was shot once in the head."

The officer has been identified as Collin Rose, of St. Clair Shores. He is a five-year veteran of the Wayne State University Police Department.
Police said Rose had surgery at Detroit Receiving Hospital. He is on life support.

"The officer is out of surgery," said Wayne State University President M. Roy Wilson. " ... his family's with him now. He's got a tough road to climb, but we just have to see what happens."
"It's a very traumatic episode, so right now we're just hoping for the best," said Wayne State University police Chief Anthony Holt. "The best news we've received so far is that the officer has come out of surgery, he's in recovery, and we just have to wait and see."
Detroit police Chief James Craig said Rose was near the Woodbridge Estates around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday investigating car robberies. Officers had been in the area Monday night for complaints of navigation devices and other items being stolen from cars.
Rose let other police know he was in the area, and when another Wayne State officer arrived, he found the officer lying face-down on the ground with a gunshot wound, Craig said.

"It's very troubling," Craig said. "It's a sad day, and we're just hoping for his recovery."
Rose's gun was missing, but has been recovered, authorities said.
Police named Deangelo Davis a person of interest in connection with the shooting. Davis was taken into custody around 9:45 p.m. Tuesday. He is now being called a suspect.
Police released a picture of the suspect's bicycle, calling it "unique" and saying that they think it could help someone identify the man. The bicycle is blue with yellow and black lettering and stripes. There is an old chain wrapped around the bicycle underneath the seat cushion.

A woman who lives near the scene said she heard three shots from her home. She said they were so loud she jumped out of her bed and onto the floor and stayed there for close to five minutes before she heard police sirens coming.
She said she didn't hear any sounds of fighting from her home.
