GARDEN CITY, Mich. – A woman in Garden City was raped early Tuesday morning by an intruder in her home with her family just a few feet away.
Her husband said she sleeps in the living room because of a bad back. He was in the bedroom and the TV was on. He said the intruder had a knife to his wife's throat and told her not to make a sound while her three children and husband were 15 feet away.
"I was flipping out because I just woke up and my wife was covered in a blanket and she told me she just got raped and she was crying," he said.
The intruder broke through a back window about 6:30 a.m. The woman's husband said the man told his wife that if she told anyone then he would come back.
"What do we do now? Do we put the house up for sale and move? I don't have a clue what to do right now. I'm just in shock. I'm worried about my family, worried about my wife," the man said.
He is not being named in this story for his and his family's safety. His wife was at the hospital while he spoke to Local 4 on Tuesday. Family members were traveling in from out of state for support. The woman's husband is worried a violent criminal is watching them.
"The next-door neighbor had something happen during the summer where a guy tried to come through the back window. If the guy's jumping through and coming through people's windows, they said, it's probably not somebody doing it randomly," he said.
Garden City police removed bags of evidence from the home, including the broken window. Of course, the husband and father wants his wife's attacker caught and punished as he copes with a range of emotions.
"I'm supposed to be there to protect my wife and family and I wasn't there. I mean, I was there, but I wasn't there. It's very frustrating," he said.
Police said there is no description of her attacker because his face was half covered with a mask and hoodie.
