DETROIT – A women's basketball team from Cleveland volunteered at Arts and Scraps, a nonprofit Detroit organization Friday morning.
Arts and Scraps has been around for decades and helps children reach their potential and spark their creativity through arts and crafts. The organization receives 28 tons of recycled and reusable items annually and serves around 275,000 children.
"They come from various organizations, different groups, and individuals that say they don't know what to do with items," said James Henderson, the executive director.
The Cleveland State University women's basketball team volunteered to help make educational kits for the kids. One of their coaches, Oties Epps, is from Highland Park.
"I remember when I was younger receiving things, various holidays clothes, gift boxes full of toys so being here today is near and dear to my heart," he said.
Warehouse manager, Tonia Brown, said the organization is more than a place where kids go to have fun, but it's also an avenue for new opportunities to learn and grow for students who don't have the chance to make art and be creative in school.
"It's important to have a place that gives people access to art and materials in a totally reimagined way. It gives kids the opportunity to explore their creative side in a way that they probably won't be able to in any other way," she said.
