ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Former San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh was officially introduced as the University of Michigan's new head football coach on Tuesday.

During a press conference, Athletic Director Jim Hackett said Harbaugh will have the same salary he had with the 49ers and his contract is for 7 years.

The former Michigan quarterback called it a homecoming.

"You have my pledge that I will carry forward the tradition of excellence of the University of Michigan football program," Harbaugh said Tuesday in a room full of reporters and photographers.

The coach said he has dreamed of this position since he was a child when his father was part of the Michigan football coaching staff.

"It was a very quick process," Harbaugh said about becoming the new Michigan coach.

When asked how he would approach turning around the team, Harbaugh said it's not a turnaround.

"This is Michigan. There are no turnarounds. This is greatness," he said.

Harbaugh spent the last four seasons coaching the NFL's San Francisco 49ers, leading the team to three NFC conference championship games and within three points of a Super Bowl.

Harbaugh and the 49ers agreed to mutually part ways Sunday after the team's win over the Arizona Cardinals in the season finale. He led the team to a total record of 44-19 after taking over a franchise eight years removed from its last winning season.

The 51-year-old played quarterback at the University of Michigan from 1983-1986 under legendary coach Bo Schembechler, amassing 5,449 passing yards and 31 passing touchdowns. He spent 14 years playing in the NFL after graduating from the school.

In his most recent stop as a college coach, Harbaugh led Stanford University to a 12-1 record in 2010, his fourth year with the team. Just four seasons after finishing 1-11 under Walt Harris, Stanford carried the No. 4 BCS ranking into the 2011 Orange Bowl and waxed Virginia Tech 40-12 in Harbaugh's final game before taking the 49ers job. Harbaugh posted a 29-21 record at Stanford over four seasons.
