Sheahan hasn't scored a goal all season for Detroit and has notched just 9 assists in 58 games. He was a 1st-round draft pick by the Red Wings in 2010. His best season was 2014-15 when he scored 36 points in 79 games.
Toronto coach Mike Babcock already has former Red Wings defenseman Alexey Marchenko in his lineup after the Red Wings let the 25-year-old Russian go on waivers. Sheahan to the Leafs would give Babcock another young player he has helped coach into the NHL.
The 2017 NHL Trade Deadline is 3 p.m. ET on March 1.
