Ranking the Week 3 Big Ten football games

MSU travels to Notre Dame, Michigan hosts Colorado

No description found

If you're reading this, that means you survived a college football weekend with zero matchups between ranked teams. So congratulations; you weathered the storm, and now it's time to reap the benefits.

The Big Ten is coming off a disappointing week that saw many of its weaker teams miss opportunities to pick up significant wins for the conference. Penn State, Illinois and Purdue each lost to Power Five teams, but now it's the top of the conference's turn to lead the charge.

READ: Week 2 Big Ten power rankings

Here's a look at every Big Ten matchup kicking off this weekend and which ones will be the most entertaining.

Note: Indiana, Minnesota and Purdue do not play this weekend.

11. Rutgers vs. New Mexico

Game details: Saturday at noon

Rutgers struggled for a half against Howard last week, but exploded in the second half for a 52-14 win. Chris Ash will look to build off that momentum as New Mexico visits High Point Solutions Stadium. New Mexico is coming off a tough one-point loss to rival New Mexico State and travels across the country to play the Big Ten East's weakest link.

10. Maryland at UCF

Game details: Saturday at 7 p.m.

Maryland's tour of mid-major Florida schools continues Saturday as the Terrapins travel to Central Florida looking for their third straight win to kick off the season. D.J. Durkin's team is off to a fast start, outscoring Howard and FIU by a combined score of 93-27. If the Terps can knock off UCF, they'll match last season's win total before the calendar even flips to October.

9. Wisconsin vs. Georgia State

Game details: Saturday at noon

Wisconsin deserves to play a couple of easy games after opening with LSU and staring down the barrel of one of the toughest conference schedules in college football. Wisconsin will take care of Georgia State on Saturday and carry a 3-0 record into a five-week stretch against Michigan State, Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa and Nebraska.

8. Northwestern vs. Duke

Game details: Saturday at 8 p.m.

After winning 10 games in 2015, Northwestern has been the black eye of the Big Ten through two weeks. The Wildcats lost a heartbreaker to Western Michigan and then dropped an unfathomable home game to Illinois State last weekend. Pat Fitzgerald needs to right the ship this weekend against an average Duke team, or Northwestern could be looking at an 0-6 start.

7. Penn State vs. Temple

Game details: Saturday at noon

Penn State is coming off a loss to Pittsburgh and Temple has already lost to Army this season, so this isn't a matchup of two great teams. But Penn State has a chance to bounce back and salvage a winning non-conference schedule before fighting for bowl eligibility during the Big Ten season. A loss to Temple would be an enormous blow to Penn State's bowl hopes and another dent in James Franklin's armor.

6. Illinois vs. Western Michigan

Game details: Saturday at 4 p.m.

Western Michigan has already gone on the road to take down one Big Ten team, and now the Broncos are favored to beat another. Western Michigan shocked Northwestern in Week 1 and dropped 70 points on North Carolina Central as an encore. Illinois deserves to be an underdog in this game after getting smoked by North Carolina at home last week. Lovie Smith has brought plenty of hype to the Illinois program this season, but the talent still isn't there.

5. Iowa vs. North Dakota State

Game details: Saturday at noon

Why would any FBS team schedule North Dakota State? It really doesn't make sense. NDSU has won five straight FCS national championships and owns a five-game winning streak against FBS teams. Iowa has little to gain by beating an FCS team, but there's certainly risk in playing a team with such a long track record of winning. This should be a very entertaining game as Iowa puts its potential championship hopes on the line against a team with nothing to lose and enough fire power to give the Hawkeyes a run for their money. If Iowa puts a pounding on the Bison, don't dismiss it as an easy win.

4. Michigan vs. Colorado

Game details: Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Finally, the world will see what the highly ranked Wolverines are made of. After two weeks of pounding cupcake opponents, Michigan welcomes a Power Five team to Ann Arbor in its best non-conference game of the season. Colorado is off to a 2-0 start after destroying rival Colorado State and Idaho State. The Buffaloes' two-dimensional offense and mobile quarterback Sefo Liufau (120 yards on 20 carries through two games) could give the Michigan defense fits. If the Wolverines win, they have a chance to move up in the rankings, possibly even to the top of the AP poll, if a trio of top teams fall on the road.

3. Nebraska vs. Oregon

Game details: Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Even though this game might not have national stakes as high as the next two matchups, Nebraska vs. Oregon is an absolute must-watch for college football fans. Nebraska has a chance to solidify itself as a third contender in the Big Ten West and give the conference more depth at the top. The game will also be entertaining as an offensive shootout between two teams that don't play much defense. Nebraska has scored 95 points in two games and will look to victimize Brady Hoke's defense to overcome its own defensive flaws. Since Hoke took over as defensive coordinator for the Ducks, UC Davis dropped 28 points on his defense and Virginia followed up with 26 points. Luckily for the Ducks, their offense has scored 97 points of its own. This has the potential to be the most entertaining game of the weekend, even if these teams aren't lighting up the rankings.

2. Michigan State at Notre Dame

Game details: Saturday at 7:30 p.m. on Local 4

It's been two weeks since Michigan State took the field for its opener against Furman, and over eight months since the Spartans faced an FBS team. Notre Dame presents a huge challenge for Michigan State, especially during a night game in South Bend. It will be the toughest environment that the Spartans face this season, and it comes against a team desperate to stay in the national title conversation. DeShone Kizer is the player to watch in this matchup, as he enters with nine total touchdowns and only one interception. If Michigan State struggles to get pressure, as it did against Furman, Kizer will pick it apart. On offense, MSU will look to Tyler O'Connor to test the Notre Dame secondary downfield, a weakness that was exposed during the Irish's loss to Texas.

1. Ohio State at Oklahoma

Game details: Saturday at 7:30

This is the game of the week. A young Ohio State team that has cruised through the first two weeks of its schedule will travel to Norman to battle a desperate Oklahoma team that needs a win to stay in the College Football Playoff discussion. Baker Mayfield has thrown for 567 yards on 71.7 percent passing and has yet to throw an interception. For the Buckeyes, J.T. Barrett has thrown for six touchdowns and run for three more since being picked off on his first drive of the season. The Sooners don't have the playmaking fire power of Ohio State, but with the home crowd behind them and their title aspirations on the line, they'll give OSU all it can handle.
