MT. CLEMENS, Mich. – The Macomb County Sheriff's Office will be participating in a mandatory seat belt enforcement grant beginning May 23-June 5.

The initiative called "Click it or Ticket" will primarily focus on drivers not wearing their seat belts. The grant allowing extra patrols during the two-week enforcement period is being provided by the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning.

"Our primary goal is always to encourage voluntary compliance with the law. For those drivers who do not comply, our deputies will deliver warnings or issue violations as the circumstances dictate," Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said.

Michigan law currently requires drivers, front seat passengers, and any passenger that is 15 or younger to be buckled up. Additionally, children must be in a car seat until they are 8-years-old or are 4 feet 9 inches tall.
