Metro Detroit weather forecast: Cold, dry start with rain tonight

DETROIT – A dry, but cool start to the day with morning lows dipping into the upper 20s to low 30s as you head out on this Friday morning.

Skies will stay mostly cloudy most of the day with a rain maker on the way tonight. Model data is fairly consistent with starting the rain after 9 or 10 p.m. tonight and it will be heavy at times through the overnight. Some scattered thundershowers are likely too with rising temps mainly in our South Zone.

Heavy rain and isolated thundershowers will be lingering over Southeastern Lower Michigan and Southern Ontario early Saturday morning making travel very tricky. We should see a few brief breaks and highs in the low to mid 50s, but rain will come again through the day with many of us receiving over an inch of rain. The winds will be picking up too SW 10-20 mph becoming more WNW 10-25 mph late in the day. That means colder air comes pouring in through the evening hours tomorrow and we should see some of the moisture switch over to a wintry mix or snow showers Saturday Night.

It will be noticeably cooler Sunday with scattered snow on and off coming from Lake Michigan. These lake effect snow showers will be heavier closer to Lake Michigan to our west, so we don’t expect any accumulating snow other than a few isolated snow bands that can lay down a quick coating, reduce visibility, and make traveling on the roads complicated. Again, that will be in a few areas while most of us see windy, cold, and partly sunny skies with flurries.

Temps warm up a little Monday and Tuesday into the mid 40s or warmer with dry and mostly clear conditions. Thanksgiving Day right now looks dry, but we’ll need a couple of layers for America’s Thanksgiving Parade waking up Thursday in the upper 20s to low 30s.
