ANN ARBOR, Mich. – After months of construction, US-23's new innovative way to ease traffic congestion has become operational.
MDOT’s new traffic system aims to alleviate gridlock on US-23 north of Ann Arbor, one of the most congested routes in Metro Detroit.
The brand new flex lane allows the shoulder to function as an added third lane during periods of heavy traffic.
Electronic signs above the highway communicate when the shoulder is available for drivers with a green arrow. When the lane isn’t available, the sign shows a red X.
Early reports are showing improved commute times and less traffic backup.
Some commuters are wondering why the lane isn’t always open. MDOT explains that the flex lanes aren't true lanes, but rather an upgraded shoulder. In order to keep the lane open constantly, it would need to meet more strict regulations. Meeting these requirements would have raised the cost of the upgrade more than 400 percent.
While the entire project hasn't been entirely finished, it’s estimated that that it should be completed next week.
Driving on the flex route when it’s not open carries a fine of up to $130 and/or two points on your license.
