ANN ARBOR – Two local restaurants have earned a spot on PETA’s 2021 Best Vegan Chili Dishes list.

The Lunch Room Bakery & Cafe and its sister restaurant, the Detroit Street Filling Station, made the list for their Hearty Chili -- a dish featuring black and kidney beans, sweet potatoes, butternut squash, tomatillo and zesty seasonings. The dish is also gluten-free, nut-free and soy-free, making it allergy friendly.

Both restaurants, owned by Phillis Engelbert, are vegan and offer a wide variety of plant-based dishes and drinks like soy-based nacho dogs, tempeh reubens, buffalo cauliflower wings, bubble tea with coconut milk and more.

“Chili bowls are the ultimate comfort food, and this one comes with the comforting thought that no animals were harmed to make it,” PETA President Ingrid Newkirk said in a statement. “PETA celebrates The Lunch Room and the Detroit Street Filling Station for helping people tuck into their favorite foods without the cruelty or the cholesterol.”
