He will take over the role from current Interim Chief of Police Amy Metzer after she leaves the police force on Friday, Oct. 20.

City officials said City Administrator Milton Dohoney Jr. will give his recommendation for Maguire’s nomination during the next Ann Arbor City Council meeting on Monday.

Maguire has worked for the Ann Arbor Police Department for 23 years and has experience with patrol, as a detective and a K9 handler, and in management. If the city council agrees, Maguire’s new role will go into effect Saturday, Oct. 21.

“The City of Ann Arbor extends our appreciation to Interim Chief Metzer for her decades of service to the Ann Arbor community,” Dohoney said in a notice. “I want to thank her for her leadership, professionalism and advancing the AAPD during her tenure. We all wish her the best in the next chapter of her safety services career.”

The city has been searching for a permanent police chief since 2022 when the previous police chief, Chief Michael Cox, left the post to explore options in Boston, Massachusetts. Metzer was named interim chief of police in July 2022.

Four candidates for the role were invited to Ann Arbor in August for interviews but did not go further in the process.
