ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Adopt a new family member from the Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) for free this holiday season.
The Cherry Road animal shelter is waiving all adoption fees for adult cats and dogs through the end of the year in the hopes that some of its nearly 100 animals will find their forever homes.

“We’ve got so many deserving animals right now,” said HSHV Adoptions Manager Ashley Diaz Jackson in a release. “And there are so many people in our community deserving of animals’ unconditional love, too. We believe there’s a furry friend for nearly everyone, and we really hope this promotion will encourage people to open their hearts and homes, as sadly, our shelter is overfull and has been for a long time.”
Adoptable cats and dogs at HSHV have been spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and given an initial health check.
“When you adopt, you don’t just get a very grateful animal; you help save a life and make room for the many other homeless and abused animals who need us. A gift that truly keeps on giving,” Jackson said.
Studies from the ASPCA have found no connection between fee-free animal adoptions and irresponsible owner behavior, a common misconception about free animals.
Jackson noted that all potential adopters, despite the waived fee, will undergo the shelter’s adoption process, including an adoption survey and application paperwork.
“The end of the year can be a great time to adopt a new pet—when families are together, and people are home to help acclimate their new family member,” said Jackson. “HSHV offers post-adoption support for all adopters as well.”
The shelter does not require appointments for potential adoptions. Interested community members can visit adoptable animals between 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends.
