ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A Tree Town space for creativity is holding a giving campaign in the hopes of raising enough funding to continue providing tools and guidance for local makers next year.

Maker Works aims to raise $50,000 by Jan. 14, 2024, so it can offer crucial resources to community members looking to learn new skills like upholstery, woodworking, glass etching, welding and sewing.

Established in 2011, it offers expert-led classes, make-and-take events, a tool library and memberships to its workplace at 3765 Plaza Dr.

The campaign kicked off with a donation of $10,000 by Zingerman’s Mail Order, which was added to the $4,431 Maker Works raised during the campaign’s first week.

“We’re overwhelmed by the generosity and support from Zingerman’s Mail Order and all our donors,” said Maker Workds Executive Director Josh Williams in a release. “Their commitment to our cause reflects the deep-rooted community spirit that drives Ann Arbor. This donation isn’t just a contribution to Maker Works; it’s an investment in the future of creativity, innovation, and small business growth in our region.”

The non-profit will host a party on Jan. 14, 2024, where it will share the total amount raised for the giving campaign. Before that, it will host a Holiday Gift Making workshop on Saturday, Dec. 16, and drop-in fun during Kids Week from Jan.2-7, 2024.

“We’re just getting started, and every contribution counts,” added Josh. “Together, we can ensure that local makers, artists, and students like Thomas Tusano, Erika Cross, Elvira S, Community High School, and Saline FIRST Robotics are able to have access to a thriving hub for creativity and learning in Ann Arbor.”

Those interested in contributing to the campaign can visit Maker Works’ website. Support can also be shown by participating in its auction, shop sponsorships, gifting classes and volunteering.
