ANN ARBOR, Mich. – City Administrator Milton Dohoney Jr. has recommended Andre Anderson, of Arizona, to lead the Ann Arbor Police Department in 2024.

“I’m confident that Andre’s broad management experience and community engagement capabilities will be an asset to the Ann Arbor Police Department, which has a well-earned reputation for excellence,” Dohoney said in a release. “Andre has a deep understanding of current law enforcement challenges nationwide as well as opportunities for improvement. I’m confident he will serve the Ann Arbor community well.”

Anderson holds a master’s degree in educational leadership and a bachelor’s in public safety administration. He was recently the assistant police chief of Tempe, Arizona for two years. Before this, he was an executive deputy chief in Rochester, New York, and commander in Glendale, Arizona.

Ann Arbor has been looking for a permanent police chief since July 2022 when its former chief of police, Michael Cox, left the position to become a police commissioner in Boston, Massachusetts. An interim police chief, Amy Metzer, was quickly named. When she retired in October, Deputy Chief Patrick Maguire was promoted to the position.

“I believe the City of Ann Arbor is working collaboratively to implement plans to enhance an environment where community policing, the community and city government serve as problem-solving participatory partners. I am committed to building mutual trust and public safety while creating a shared vision and leadership approach that sets our agency apart and revered as the nation’s model police agency,” Anderson said.

Dohoney made his recommendation to Ann Arbor City Council during a Monday night meeting. If the city confirms the recommendation, Anderson will take up the position in early 2024.
