In 340 pages, it explores Tree Town’s growing film scene throughout the years and includes 80 interviews with people who influenced the industry, like film maker Ken Burns. The book also includes many unseen images of local film societies and cultural influencers.

It was shortlisted for the 2023 Alice award and was a 2023 State History Award winner by the Historical Society of Michigan.

“Cinema Ann Arbor” is the first book published by Fifth Avenue Press to be selected for the statewide list. The Ann Arbor-based publishing label focuses on the work on Washtenaw County creatives and authors.

AADL cardholders can check the book out from the library or get a digital copy of the book through the library’s online catalog.

Every year, the Library of Michigan chooses up to 20 books focusing on the state or written by a Michigander. Other books named on the 2024 list include Tom Lake by Ann Patchett and The White Stripes: Complete Lyrics, 1997-2007 by singer Jack White.
