The technology company creates LiDAR-based hardware, software and perception systems for autonomous vehicles and other robotics. LiDAR -- Light Detection and Ranging -- uses lasers, light and time to determine the distance between sensors and objects or surfaces.

Sensors and ground truth software from RoboSense will help Mcity Test Facility researchers widen data collection abilities at the facility and around Ann Arbor, officials said.

“Partnering with RoboSense enables Mcity to stay innovative, adaptive, and on top of the latest technological advancements in the ever-evolving field of transportation,” said Mcity Director and Civil and Environmental Engineering professor Henry Liu in a release. “We’ll now have two ways to approach data collection: The always-on, broad network of infrastructure-based sensors already deployed in Ann Arbor, and the much more targeted capability of RoboSense’s vehicle-mounted, lidar-based perception system.”

U-M students will have access to hands-on experiences at a start-up-in-residence program through RoboSense’s interdisciplinary network and the Perot Jain TechLab at Mcity.

“RoboSense’s North American headquarters in Michigan are in close proximity to Mcity,” said RoboSense President of North America Peipei Zhao. “It is a natural partnership; we share a local community and the mission to advance transportation safety, sustainability, equity, and accessibility. By providing our cutting-edge LiDAR hardware and software solutions and hands-on support, we are part of a collective effort to realize the future of mobility.”
