ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A 36-year-old man is in Washtenaw County Jail after trying to steal from parked cars and swimming away from the police.

Miguel Angel Aparicio-Navas, who was charged with a 2023 sexual assault, was picked up by police around 9:30 p.m. on Thursday near the 3600 block of Partridge Path.

Officers were responding to calls of a man trying to open car doors in an apartment complex parking lot, officials said.

When police arrived at the scene, Aparicio-Navas ran into a small pond and tried to swim away. Police said he was submerged up to his neck and officers became concerned when they saw him shivering. He was pulled from the pond.

During his arrest, it was found that there was an active warrant for Aparicio-Navas for his connection to a sexual assault that happened on Sept. 24, 2023, on Woodbury Drive near Stadium Boulevard. A 27-year-old female was grabbed by an unknown man who groped her genitalia. The suspect fled the scene and police were later able to identify that man as Aparicio-Navas.

Officials said he is also suspected of another sexual assault that happened in 2021.

He was charged on March 8 with fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct and criminal sexual conduct assault with the intent to commit sexual penetration, a 2-year misdemeanor and a 10-year felony, respectively.

Aparicio-Navas was given a $100,000 cash/surety bond.
