ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Development of a new affordable housing complex in Ann Arbor’s Kerrytown neighborhood is set to start on Sunday.
Supported by Avalon Housing and the Ann Arbor Housing Commission (AAHC), the property, at 121 Catherine St., will have 63 units available to those exiting homelessness, low-income residents, qualifying artists and community members needing supportive services.

The site was formerly a city-owned surface parking lot on the northwest corner of 4th Avenue and Catherine Street with 49 parking spaces.
When complete, the L-shaped building will cover 64,529 square feet. It is expected to have 62 one-bedroom apartments, 1 two-bedroom apartment, 18 public parking spaces, electric vehicle charging stations, an EV carshare for residents, and a pedestrian walkway that accesses the Ann Arbor Farmers Market.
Residential units are anticipated to be on five floors of the building and there will be a community space set aside for future non-profit use.
Officials said a development team has worked with a community leadership council of local residents and artists to ensure the new complex honors Kerrytown’s Black history and Black-owned businesses.
Sunday’s groundbreaking event, at 3 p.m., will celebrate the new development and its ties to Kerrytown’s historically Black roots. Speakers at the event include Avalon Housing Executive Director Aaron Cooper, Ann Arbor Housing Commission Executive Director Jennifer Hall and 12 members of the Community Leadership Council.
