ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A member of the Michigan national championship team has retired from football just weeks after signing with the Green Bay Packers, according to a report.
Trente Jones spent five seasons in Ann Arbor, winning three Big Ten titles and a national championship.
The news of his retirement was first reported by Packers writer Matt Schneidman. The reason has not been officially revealed.
Jones spent most of Michigan’s magical three-year run as a versatile depth piece and sixth lineman, but he was thrust into a starting role for the Big Ten Championship Game and College Football Playoff as a redshirt senior because of the injury to Zak Zinter in the Ohio State game.
Jones is perhaps best known for grabbing the Block M flag and waving it in the end zone of Ohio Stadium after Michigan’s second of three-straight victories over the Buckeyes.
He was an important part of Michigan’s offensive line winning back-to-back Joe Moore awards in 2021 and 2022, and he was key member of the program’s first 15-0 season in 2023.
Jones went undrafted last month, but signed with the Packers as a free agent. If he chooses to return to the NFL, the Packers will have the right to sign him.
The Packers placed undrafted rookie OL Trente Jones from Michigan on the reserve/retired list.
