The City of Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation Services Area is currently accepting project designs that tie in nature and the Huron River.

Designs for the Barton-Bandemer Park Pedestrian Tunnel will be laser cut into metal panels mounted to the tunnel walls and backlit by lights. Proposed designs should be 2D images that can be created via laser cutting.

Officials said the City will pay up to $8,500 for the accepted tunnel design and will pay for the cost of materials and installation.

The tunnel’s construction is expected in 2025. It will connect Bandemer Park and the Barton Nature Area allowing pedestrians to walk safely under the Amtrak railroad.

Gallup Park’s new bridge will be made of concrete and natural materials, like wood or cobblestones, and will also have bank-stabilizing boulders and stones at each abutment. Proposed designs can utilize different art mediums and include the stabilizing structures.

Bridge designs are budgeted to cost up to $40,000.

The bridge is under construction right now and is expected to be done by fall 2024, officials said.

Individual artists or teams from around the United States are eligible to submit designs for one or both projects up until 11:59 p.m. on June 23.

Both art projects are being done in collaboration with the A2AC’s Art in Public Program.
