Scio Township officials say to avoid Honey Creek after sewer discharge

SCIO TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Officials are urging Washtenaw County residents to avoid swimming or touching in Honey Creek after a sewer discharged into the waterway.

The impacted area of the creek is east of North Zeeb Road and north of I-94 in Scio Township, just west of Ann Arbor.

Approximately 15,000 gallons of sewage were discharged into the creek due to sewer backup, Mlive reported.

Scio Township Utilities Director Brandon McNiel said the township is working with the Washtenaw County Health Department and the Michigan Department of Energy, Great Lakes and Environment (EGLE) to resolve the problem.

Mlive reported that officials believe discharge the Friday night, May 31, to Sunday night, June 2.
