ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Joy Road bridge above US-23 is closed indefinitely as the Michigan Department of Transportation determines how much damage was done when a semi truck hit the overpass around 8:30 p.m. on Monday, June 17.

The truck was headed south and pulling a backhoe on a trailer when the backhoe’s boom struck the underside of the bridge, Michigan State Police said.

A 51-year-old man from Purvis, Mississippi was driving the semi. He was issued a traffic citation for causing or allowing the vehicle to be operated over height.

The bridge has been closed in both directions while the damage is evaluated. Drivers should find alternative routes.

No other vehicles were involved and no one was injured, police said.
