WASHTENAW COUNTY, Mich. – Residents should be wary of phone or email scams from individuals claiming to be from the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials said there has been an increase in reports of scammers saying they are from the Sheriff’s Office. Suspects may even be using a current employee’s name, phone number or email address.

Scammers will ask for money, gift cards or other forms of financial support, then threaten potential victims with arrest and jail time if they receive pushback.

“To be perfectly clear, The Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office does not and will not ask for money, gift cards or ANY financial compensation to be given specifically to ANY individual employee,” officials wrote in a release.

Residents should never give out personal or financial information to possible scammers.

Phone and email communications from supposed Sheriff’s Office employees can be verified by calling Metro Dispatch at 734-994-2911 or 911.
