PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A pedestrian was hit by an SUV while trying to cross a major street in Washtenaw County, officials said.

The crash happened at 10:10 p.m. Friday, July 12, 2024, on Washtenaw Avenue, near Maple Drive, in Pittsfield Township.

Officials said a 2018 Ford Escape was heading east on Washtenaw Avenue between Maple Drive and Foster Avenue when two people started to walk across the road.

They were walking from the south side of Wastenaw Avenue without using a crosswalk, according to Pittsfield Township police.

The 21-year-old Detroit woman driving the Escape saw one of the people and swerved to avoid them, officials said. But the passenger side of the SUV struck a 54-year-old Pittsfield Township man.

He was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.

The driver was not injured.

Police shut down Washtenaw Avenue between Maple Drive and Foster Avenue for several hours to investigate the crash. That investigation continues.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has any information is asked to call Pittsfield Township police at their confidential tip line: 734-822-4958.
