The incident happened around 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 16.

Officials with the Ann Arbor Police Department are asking the public to help identify the two men, who knocked on the family’s door, rang the doorbell and called out to the homeowner by name.

One of the men then showed a picture of an on his phone to the door camera.

Both men got into a grey minivan and drove away when no one answered.

The homeowner does not know the men or why they would visit the home, police reported.

As the Ann Arbor Police Chief, I am also asking our public to help in identifying two males connected to an incident where they walked onto the residential property of an African American family who live within the Ann Arbor Foxfire Subdivision. These males proceeded to the resident’s front door, persistently knocked, activated their ring doorbell camera several times, and displayed a photo of an Ape within the lens capture area. These actions were deliberate, as one of the assailants could be explicitly heard mentioning an African American male homeowner’s name as he displayed the photo of the Ape. This incident occurred on July 16, 2024, at approximately 8:00 pm while the homeowners were in their residence. The homeowners do not know these two individuals and believe their actions were racially motivated.

Officials noted concern among community members and the department’s commitment to public safety.

“This incident is under active investigation, and we are committed to ensuring the protection of our community,” AAPD wote on social media.

Anyone with information, or who can identify the men, should contact the police department at 734-794-6939 or through email at tips@a2gov.org.
