ANN ARBOR, Mich. – One pup at the Humane Society of Huron Valley showed the world that old dogs can learn new tricks and escaped the Ann Arbor shelter twice in search of his forever home.
Tiki, a 10-year-old stray, took the shelter’s July “Empty the Shelters” event to heart and snuck out of the HSHV office and out of the building.

“He was put in his crate in the office when staff left for the evening. Somehow, he got out of the crate, opened the office door, then walked out our front doors,” said HSHV CEO Tanya Hilgendorf in a release. “Only to happily greet one of our veterinarians in the parking lot at 6 a.m.”
Tiki’s Houdini-like ability to escape his crate was even more evident after he freed himself again and cheekily strolled out of the shelter’s front doors.
He was found near the University of Michigan Matthaei Botanical Gardens and returned to HSHV.
“Tiki is now safely secured back at HSHV and has an interested adopter. We hope he gets a home quickly—one prepared for a laid-back but clever older gent who wants to be someone’s loving and constant companion,” said Hilgendorf. “He has some special needs, but he is a very good boy.”
Through July 31, HSHV is participating in the nationwide Bissell Pet Foundation “Empty the Shelters.” Adult cats and dogs over six months old can be adopted for just $50.
All adoptable animals are vaccinated, microchipped and spayed or neutered.
