Moore and the No. 18-ranked Wolverines ran through the No. 11-ranked USC Trojans 27-24 to seal an upset victory to open Big Ten play this past Saturday during their first-ever “stripe out” inside The Big House.
It was a nip-and-tuck, knockdown-drag-out game that came down to the last drive for the Wolverines, who had not gained a first down until the final drive.
On that final drive, trailing by 24-20, the men in maize completed a historic 10-play, 89-yard touchdown drive that came down to a fourth and one in the waning minutes.
The drive featured a heavy dose of running back Kalel Mullings, who broke a 63-yard run to put the Wolverines in scoring position and retake the lead.
The senior tailback scored on a one-yard run on fourth down thanks to fullback Max Bredeson and his massive block on the left side, which cleared a path for Mullings to put the Wolverines ahead 27-24 with 37 seconds remaining in the game.
Mullings toted the pigskin 17 times for 161 yards and two loud touchdowns. The bully-ball approach guided the men in maize to rack up 290 rushing yards, with 199 coming in the first half.
The Wolverines accumulated 322 yards of total offense, while their stout defense held the high-powered Trojans to 96 yards on 21 carries.
“Coach Moore and the Wolverines rallied to pull off a come-from-behind, upset win in a battle between two of college football’s most storied programs,” said Jim Terry, chairman of the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Foundation. “This was a hard-fought victory for the Wolverines and a statement win for Coach Moore in his first full year leading the program.”
Off the football field, Moore’s players have succeeded in the classroom during his tenure, recording a perfect 1,000 Academic Progress Rate and an 89 Graduation Success Rate during the 2023 season.
The Graduation Success Rate measures the number of student-athletes who graduate from their school within six years of entering the university.
“Coach Moore made a statement with his first victory over a ranked opponent as the official head coach of the Wolverines,” said Peach Bowl, Inc. CEO and President Gary Stokan. “He’s already taking the reins and solidifying that he’s an ideal choice to lead one of college football’s biggest brands.”
Catch Moore and his Wolverines this Saturday as they’ll play host to the Minnesota Golden Gophers at 12 p.m.
