YPSILANTI, Mich. – The family of Marquis Burns, an Ypsilanti father who went missing in March 2021, finally has answers. Burns’ remains have been identified in Detroit, nearly three years after his disappearance according to his family.
Burns’ sister, Ashley Scott, spoke about the discovery, thanking the community for their support during the long search.
“Marquis has been found. Me and the family wanted to thank everybody for helping, people that came out to look,” said Scott at the Crimestoppers Michigan headquarters in Southfield on Monday, December 30th.
According to Scott, Marquis’ body was discovered in a vacant house in Southwest Detroit following a fire. It took time for DNA testing to confirm his identity.
“He was actually found in a fire in Detroit. They came to put the fire out and found him in a basement of a vacant house,” she said.
Burns, who was known by the nickname “Boogie” because of his love for dancing, was last seen alive near Rouge Park in Detroit on March 9, 2021.
Scott says police have identified people of interest in the case, though no names have been publicly released. She said she someone close to her brother may have been involved.
“People don’t just go missing,” she said.
At a press conference held at the Crime Stoppers headquarters in Southfield, Scott issued a message to those responsible for her brother’s death.
“You thought you got away with something, but you didn’t. You’re all going to go down. Whoever knows something, anything—you’re going to go down.”
