Police say suspect in double homicide, kidnapping in Washtenaw County admitted to plan to sell child

NORTHFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Local 4 is learning disturbing details about a double homicide and kidnapping in Northfield Township.

Det. Sgt. Jason Roberts testified about the events that unfolded on January 1, 2025, at the home on Nollar Bend Road leaving two people dead and two children witnessing this unfold, according to testimony.

The case began when a neighbor discovered a man who had been shot in the face. Officers responding to the scene were directed to a nearby address, where they found additional victims, according to testimony.

Jeffrey Bernhard, a foster parent and survivor of the attack, identified the shooter as 39-year-old Shuvonne Vinson.

“Jeffrey stated that his wife, Jennifer; his grandfather, Steven; his biological daughter, who is nine; and their foster child, who is four, were in the residence,” Det. Roberts testified.

According to Bernhard, Vinson, the biological mother of the 4-year-old, knocked on the door of their home before entering with two armed accomplices, Keith Finley and Gregory Callhan. After forcing Jeffrey and Jennifer to transfer funds to her bank account, the situation escalated quickly and violently, police said.

“Jeffrey stated to me that he was pistol-whipped first, hit with the butt of a gun… then he was shot in the chest, and then he was shot in the head,” Roberts said. “He said right after that, his wife was shot in the head.”

The victims’ 9-year-old provided further details. “She stated that she watched [Vinson] shoot her father in the head, shoot her mom in the head, and her grandfather, Steven, was laying on the floor,” Roberts testified.

“[The 9-year-old] was no more than 20 feet away from her mother when this happened,” Roberts said.

After the alleged murders, Vinson and her accomplices then abducted the foster child, the victims’ 9-year-old and their family dog, according to police. Police said Vinson later claimed she took the children to protect them.

“She did not want [the 9-year-old to go back in and see what had happened to her people,” Det. Roberts testified.

The suspects drove to Vinson’s mother’s residence in Ypsilanti, where Washtenaw County deputies stopped their vehicle and arrested the trio. The children were recovered safely.

According to police testimony, when questioned, one accomplice, Gregory Callhan, admitted they intended to sell the 9-year-old. Vinson told investigators she went to the house to “protect her daughter and to prevent these people from ever harming another child again in their lives.”

Police say Callhan also disclosed that Vinson directed him to bring a shotgun for the attack.

The suspects were found with stolen firearms and a vehicle reported stolen out of Detroit. All three suspects, including Vinson, Callhan, and Keith Finley, have prior felony convictions.

The investigation has resulted in charges against all three suspects, including murder, kidnapping and weapons offenses.
