ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Over 8,000 gallons of raw sewage spread onto a road in Ann Arbor Wednesday, leaking into the storm drain.
City staff responded to the intersection of South Main and West Madison on May 7, 2025, for a report of water coming from a water utility cover.
They initially thought water was coming out, but quickly learned that the sanitary sewer pipe burst, causing about 8,400 gallons of raw sewage to be released onto the roadway.
The city said the raw sewage flowed into the storm drain, which flows and daylights to Allen Creek, which then ultimately flows to the Huron River.
Ann Arbor staff reported the incident to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy.
