Within 90 minutes, officers conducted 34 traffic stops for speeding violations, according to the police department.
“The goal of this enforcement wasn’t to write tickets, but rather to change dangerous driving behavior and keep everyone safe on the road,” Ann Arbor police said.
This enforcement was conducted as part of the city’s Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries that result from crashes.
City officials used crash data from 2019 to 2024 to identify three safety corridors where these crashes occur. These corridors include the following:
- Washtenaw Corridor — From Geddes Avenue to Huron Parkway
- Packard Corridor — From Fifth Avenue to Turnberry Drive
- Jackson Corridor — From Burwood Avenue to Gralake Avenue
In December 2024, the city announced that officers will have an increased focus on enforcing traffic laws in these areas.
“Speed is a major part of how severe and deadly a crash will be, therefore slowing vehicles down is an important strategy toward reaching Vision Zero,” according to the 2024 news release from the city. “All travelers are being asked to help by cooperating with safety laws and practices and by encouraging others to do the same.”
