DETROIT – Whole Foods Market Detroit, in partnership with Midtown Detroit Inc., is accepting proposals from local artists interested in displaying their work as part of the Detroit store currently under construction.

The winning artist or team of artists will receive a cash stipend of up to $34,000, depending on the number of works and artists chosen.
That breaks down to $7,500 per project panel, plus $1,000 for materials.
The project is open to Detroit-based artists only.
"Whole Foods Market continues finding inventive ways to include the community in the creation of this store," said Sue Mosey, President of Midtown Detroit, Inc. "Utilizing the talents of local artists to make the exterior of the store more visually appealing and representative of Detroit is an exceptional homage to the city and its residents."
Artists, or artist team, are encouraged to include a variety of media and will be chosen for their ability to design a Detroit-themed mural that addresses Whole Foods Market's primary beliefs, including the issues of local foods, healthy living, community support and environmental responsibility.
Four artists or teams will be chosen by a committee of individuals that includes a variety of local art experts and Detroit residents.
Submissions will be put on display for community input throughout December.
Deadline for submissions is October 15, 2012.
All applicants will be notified of the committee's decision via email by January 15, 2013.
Artists are encouraged to view the exterior elevations/architectural drawings prior to application, which can be found at the Whole Foods Market office at 3670 Woodward Avenue in Detroit.
The murals will feature removable panels that will be installed in a standard framing system anchored directly to the concrete screen wall.
They will be weather protected, which will be applied prior to installation.
Each panel is 23 feet wide by 14 feet tall and will be divided into eight smaller panels for easy transport and installation.
Interested artists can direct mural competition questions or other correspondence to: DetroitMural@wholefoods.com.
