DETROIT – The Detroit Police Department has welcomed a new partner to its mounted unit -- but something's missing.
The 12-year-old Selle Francias horse needs a name.
The department is asking for students from the city of Detroit's public and charter schools to submit a suggestion.
Students must be in the first through sixth grades.
The mounted unit currently has five horses in service, named Wynn, Elmo, Baby, and Tiny.
Students can submit one name by providing their name, a contact telephone number and the suggested name of the horse to:
Office of Public Information
Telephone: (313) 596-2200
Fax: (313) 596-1450
Mailing address:
The Office Public Information, 1300 Beaubien, Room 203, Detroit, MI, 48226.
Interim Chief of Police Chester L. Logan will select the winner, who will be invited to the mounted unit's barn for the naming ceremony.
The ceremony will include placing the new name plate over the horse's stall.
The deadline for submission is Dec. 20, 2012.
