Northville nonprofit asks for donations to feed needy

NORTHVILLE, Mich. – A nonprofit organization that offers temporary food assistance to families in Northville is in need of donations.

The Northville Civic Concern already helps 170 families, and the need is growing -- but the donations are not.

"What we have right now would be gone in one weeks-worth of distribution," said director Marlene Kunz. "The demand is so great we are in need of all food right now."

The program is run year-round by volunteers, with most of their donations coming from food drives hosted by churches and schools.

But even the smallest donation from anyone willing to help is appreciated.

"I brought toilet paper, canned goods and some Halloween decorations and toys for the kids," said Jane Harris. "I know I fortunate I am helping out families makes me feel good."

Families have to go through an interview process to become eligible to get food from the program.

"We serve all types of people," said Kunz. "Ninety-nine of our families are working families, some have 12 children, others elderly, some are in foreclosure."
