This year's contest includes four major categories: art, music, poetry, and essay. And each participating student may submit one entry per category, focusing on one of two themes: "Name an African American past or present that you admire and describe how that person impacted or continues to impact history," or "How do you feel young people today can make an impact on history?"

Applications to enter the contest are available in Kroger locations across Michigan, and online here.

Students have until 5 p.m. on February 29 to submit their entries.

Winners will notified by March 30, and will be invited to the "I Can Make History" awards dinner.
