Clarkston spa owner holds event to raise money for suicide awareness

Heavenly Day spa in Clarkston to raise money for Common Ground

CLARKSTON, Mich. – The winter months can be difficult on our skin, and sometimes we need to give ourselves a little tender loving care.

At the Heavenly Day spa in Clarkston, customers can treat themselves to a spa day while also donating to a great cause.

"Why don't I take what I learned to do in school and everything that I love and am so passionate about and put it together and raise money for suicide prevention?" said Jessica Keesling, the owner of Heavenly Day spa.

This month, Keesling's spa is holding a spa day to raise money for Common Ground, a Pontiac organization that helps bring awareness to suicide and helps with mental illness.

Suicide is a familiar issue for Keesling and her family.

"I lost my dad in 2009, when I was 16 years old," Keesling said. "Fast forward three years later, I lost my granda in 2013, and then this past year, I lost my uncle."

This is the sixth year Keesling will be holding a Facials Against Suicide event, but this year will be even more meaningful for her, as it will take place Feb. 23, 2019, the 10-year anniversary of her father's death.

She said it's a painful memory with which she and her family are still living.

"I just want to do something to help so people don't feel the way that we do, feel so alone and abandoned and left behind," Keesling said.

The spa day will be held at her day spa on Pleton Road. Customers can book appointments for facials, waxings, makeup application and massages and also stick around for a memorial after the spa day to honor anyone who has died from suicide.

Keesling is inviting everyone to stay and share stories and memories, as well as listen to a few guest speakers.

"For me, talking about it helps me cope," Keesling said.
