Go 4 It: Generous shoe donations boost confidence for school kids

DETROIT – When we asked Local 4 viewers to donate shoes, we weren’t sure how that would turn out.

Shoes are expensive and viewers would have to get in their cars and drive to Detroit’s west side to drop them off. But you showed up in overwhelming numbers for the Go 4 It: Shoes for School event at Durfee Innovation Society.

Unlike clothes that can be handed down, shoe structures wear down and conform to the foot of the child who previously wore them. Old shoes hinder children from fully participating and engaging in childhood experiences at school and play.

Students and parents across the area were thrilled with their new shoes.

“It was a weight lifted off my shoulders,” said Patricia Hoskins. “I’m a mother of four girls and Christopher, so I have five children, and shoes are almost something we need every six months.”

“It kind of brought tears to my eyes because you never know the support that’s out there,” said Tamika Jones.

The community’s generosity exceeded all our expectations. Thanks to Local 4 viewers, children returned to school this year with more confidence and dignity.

We want to honor those making a difference. Click here to nominate someone who’s Going 4 It in your community. We’ll be featuring your nominees every month on Local 4 and ClickOnDetroit.
